Publication : Newsweek.
Date if article : sept. 20. 2008

summary
Alter argues for providing education for women in developing countries.
he explains that education girl is the most important part of reducing the population in developing countries.

Issue-Why should girl get to school?
-Why can developing countries reduce their population size by providing education to girls?

opinion.
I think that in developing countries women are often uneducated and do not have demanding jobs, so they are identified as just being a mother.
If a women is educated, she can choose the kind of birth control to use and be more likely to use it.
For this reason, I believe that developing country's governments should providie laws for reducing population about brith control methods.

- Website: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2010/02/school-under-fire-for-spying-on-kid-via-webcam-at-home.ars

Short Summary:-
Laptops are issued more often these days. Many high schools are providing their students equipped laptops in order to access the schools programs, resources and projects, which they can take home with. But there was an incident in Pennsylvania high school, when one of the students family discovered that the school equipped their laptops with a 24/7 access to activate their webcams. However the student Blake Robbin was disciplined by the assistant principle of his school for engaging in improper behavior in his own home. The Robbins family filed a lawsuit against the school for spying on their kid and violating a serious privacy problem. According to the article the school did not want to discuss this incident with media or any one. The author also mentioned a similar case from 2008 when a woman in Florida took her laptop for repair and eventually discovered that it was equipped to take photos of her at home without her knowledge.

Issues that I found:-
1. Do the school have the right to violate their students privacy at home, in order to discipline them?
2. Although webcams are very useful these days, should they be removed from our laptops?

My opinion:-
I think that what the school did was a sick pervert violation to the students privacy. Before we judge the students for what they are doing at home, we must judge the principle who is watching those poor children.

Short summary:
This news report primarily explains a story of a high scool, which distributed laptops to its students aiming at provinding 24/7 access to the school based resources. However, a student claimed that some schools officials have remote accessing students laptops to take webcam photos of them at home.

Issues I could find:
Should the school b responsible for a mistake of one of its staff?
Does the school have the right to spy on its students in the pupose of making sure that they behave well in their houses.
Is the right reaction to this issue to close the school or just fire who did the mistake?

My opinion:
I have to say that the schhol has nothing to do with this issue; it is a one person's mistake. Therefor, whoever made it should be punished personally. All in all, the more technology we have in the market, the more misuse it will have by the bad people.

Short summary: This article is about a teen boy ( 18 years old ), who was arrested by the police last week and accused of posting "death threats" to his ex-girlfriend and her family. He was chrged with two counts the first one was a misdemeanor while the second a felony charge.
Issues that I could find:
Should a threat on a social networking website be taken seriously ?
Is the punishment really severe for a teen boy?
Is the boy going to be safe safe in jail or he might be ruined?
My opinion:
I totally and completely believe that the boy made a big mistake and that he should be taken seriously by the girl's family and the police alike. That said, I don't think jail is the right place for him. Further, it would be something expected if he becomes even worse after he is out of jail.

Title of article : Teachers beset by unruly parents

Publication: The Japan Times

Date of article: Jan 7, 2009

Summary

In the article, author talks about relationship between teachers and parents. One parents called to homeroom teacher many times because they heard that their child was bullied. But their child actually enjoyed school life, so teacher didn't understand the reason. Because of this, the teacher exhausted and felt stress. Now the number of such parents increase and they demand unreasonable things to teachers because parents want their child to treat specially. As a result, a lot of teacher suffered from this. Such parents are called "monster parents"

Issues

How do teachers treat monster parents?
How should parents treat their children?
How do parents change their thought?

My opinion

Such parents think educational responsibility has teachers. In fact, it is wrong and parents should teach basic manner before entering elementary school. And teachers have to teach what children can't learn in the house such as communication skill, obeying rules, and studying. In addition, parents protect children too much. Because of this problem, they offer unreasonable demands for school. As a result, a lot of teacher commit suicide, become mental illness, and stop going to the school. Moreover, teacher can't deal with another work, such as prepare next class, attend meeting, and join club activity. Parents should reconsider what they think. But teachers also have problems, such as sexual harassment, shortage of teaching skill, and so on. Because of this, teacher's authority is lost and parents don't trust teacher. As a result, they will be monster parents. People have to consider the solutions of monster parents.

Some people say don't have to totally accept it in our daily live, but we can work to make some changes and support, claim and protect the special groups. My opinion:
I think the marriage of same gender can be accepted. You can't say the love between people with the same gender is not true love, no matter same gender or not, if they have true love, they can get married as they want. In terms of same-sex marriage are unfit for the procreation, I think they can adopt a child if they really love children, but in my opinion, if two same-sex people have decided to get married, they must have already made up their mind that they don't want any children.

Some critics have argued that swine flue was spread by drug companies for their benefit, so it was a big issue because at least 14,142 people died. On the other hand, WHO officials say that the idea of fake swine flue is wrong. They said as 'irresponsible' some critics who said swine flu is fake.

Your opinion.
- In my opinion, it would be caused by drug companies for their own benefit. The companies are making drugs to cure us and get better nutrition, but they could make some disease for their benefit. The companies' first purpose is not to cure people. It seems like they are making drug for human's health. But, their first purpose is to earn money. If they give us drugs to recover completely, how can they earn money? They do not make absolutely perfect drugs because they want to us get drugs again and again. So they could make swine flu.

Grocery stores to petition for end to liquor license cap

Title: Grocery stores to petition for end to liquor license cap
Date: Thursday, Feburary 4, 2010
Publication: DE

Summary

This news is about the petition to end the liquor license cap in Carbondale. Carbondale retailers Schnucks, Kroger, Neighborhood Co-op Grocery and Arnold's Market decide to petition the council to permit grocery stores to sell beer and wine. If grocery stores want to sell beer or wine, the City Council has to vote to get rid of the cap on the city's number of Class C liquor licenses.

Issues

* If the City council permits to amend or remove the cap on the city's number of Class C liquor licenses, will that be a problem for university students especially?
* "For many people wine is part of the meal now, and they really do like to pick out the wine and food together," do you agree with this statement?

Opinion

From my point of view, there is no reason to oppose permitting selling alcohol at grocery stores, because people don't want to spend enough time buying the alcohol at allowed places. In addition, we might buy it cheaper than ever in Carbondale.

Date of article: 1/28/2010

summary
When one woman sold rice in Haiti, the group of thief attacked her at a homeless camp. They stole the food and went away. People in Haiti can't get enough food to live, so such crime happened many times.

Issues
Security in Haiti got worse because of earthquake, so the crime like robbery happened everywhere because they can't get food. people's feelings vecame degenerate.

my opinion
U.N. should support more as soon as they can. If theis condition doesn't got better, it will be much worse. People in Haiti feel fear day by day, so it is the most important to guard their safety. Moreover, I'm worried about what children begin robbery. Before it doesn't happen such crime, everybody should try to help them.

Title of the article: In Response to Iran´s Nuclear Program, German Firms Are Slowly Pulling Out
Publication: The New York Times
Date of the article: February 3, 2010

Summary: The European Union and especially Germany are very interested in decreasing quickly the trade with Iran. It is a response for the nuclear program of this country. The German government thinks that German companies should finish their business with Iran. However this is very complicated, because Germany is the main trading partner in Europe for Iran.

Issues:
Are these kinds of policies socially acceptable?
What is the best way to finish with nuclear programs in the world?
Is Iran a threat for the world?

Opinion: I don´t agree with the nuclear programs in the world; however I think that it is very difficult for these companies finish its activities very quickly in Iran, because they have big investments in this country. Besides, I´m not sure if this kind of policies is the best way in this problem, because a lot of people will have big costs and they are not involved in this problem.

Obama Says Nobel Peace Prize is a "Call to Action"

Author: Matt Spetalnick and Wojciech Moskwa
Title of article: Obama Says Nobel Peace Prize is a "Call to Action"
Date:Oct 9/09

Summary
This news is about the Nobel peace prize that Obama won last year. This award had different reactions around the world. But, he said that his award is a reason to work constantly to face the current issues in this society. Also, it presents different opinions about this award.
Issues
*It was absurd to give a peace award to a man who had sent 21,000 extra troops to Afghanistan.
*Obama is considering a request for at least 40,000 more troops from his top commander
*"We hope this can contribute a little bit enhance what he is trying to do"
*This award was premature
Opinion
In my opinion Obama shouldn't win this prize because he didn't do anything to win. The prize was more a popularity context than a real Nobel Prize. A person who is nominated to win this award should have a real contribution to make peace.
