Issues
- Are supposed green companies able to protect their environment from ecological disasters?
- Can the impact of the disaster be correctly measured?
Opinion
I think that in the future, before signing a contract with any oil company, officials have to be assured that the company has the ability to efficiently react when a disaster happens. Additionally, the government has to limit offshore oil exploitation.

Short summary:

There is big problematic regrading gay rights in developing countries. the article provides examples in different countries of Africa such as Burundi, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, that show the government and social intolerance for these kind of population. The article realizes as one of the biggest consequences the impossibility of gay population to access to health service and attack the HIV / AIDS. Although there has been some evolution in this matter in South Africa for example, it seems like the evolutions is just in paper and several human rights violations have affected gay population.

Issues

Why are these web pages against the principles of Pakistan?
Why are there so many people who agree with this measure?

Opinion
In my opinion, this kind of behavior is dangerous for the development of a country. For example, the government could allow only the good things of this, and hide its bad behavior. This situation could even cause a problem in the democracy of this country.

Title of article: Samuel Eto'o says detractors should "shut up"
date of article: May,28.2010

Summary: This article is mainly about a fight between two best football players in Cameroun. One is the old one: Roger Milla and the other one is the actual: Samuel Eto'o. Basically Roger say that Samuel has not brought anything to the national team. he is a good player but he just manifest his qualities in his clubs. These remarks have been supported by some people but others have criticize them, especially the moment when the old player has expressed his thoughts. It was two weeks before the people world cup. The young player Samuel has responded pretty disrespectfully in front of this point of view and after reelig off a list of his achievements

Issues that can be found:* how did the government reacted?
* What kind of atmosphere was between the two people before this confrontation?
* do the expections of a team have to be concentrated on just one player?

My opinion: I it is not bad to give a point of view but being so negative and not know when and where to do it sre really unfavorable. for me it is rude and ungratefull to affirm that a player has not brought anything to your country. if his job does not satisfy you, maybe his availability to play in the team because he is not oblige to do so and his personnality worldwide honor the country. brievely, a lot of things should be considered before denigrating somebody like him that way.

Summary: This article is about the death of a human right activist in Congo, a country under a dictatorship government. The possible cause of the death given by the police has not been accepted by the government and the people. Also, the government refuse the that the UN and big donors countries such as France, Canada and the United States be involded in investigations.

issues that can be found: * Will the government of Congo really investigate the cause of this death.
* why did the government refuse the implication of foreign coutries in this affair?
* Why did this man receive death treaths in his country?

My opinion: i think African people do too much regarding the violation of humans rights. people should not treath that way. they always sugarcoat thing or play with citizens mind in order for them to forget unfavorable things going on in the country. It is really bad and sad for countries wanted to be respected by others.

* will the Indian's economy not be affected by the presence of foreign companies for food?
* How will the government deal with that trend overall?
* Should a government protect its own people's shop or let the free market rule?

My opinion: It is good to improve or add things in the country but it is more important to make a balance between the advantages and disadvantages. the change in indians's market is a good thing if there is not big impacts on the country overall. hopefullt the advantages will be more influencial than the disadvantages.

The world most valuable stuff

FREDERIC B. OUEDRAOGO

The world most valuable stuff

The economist
May 22, 2010

Short summary
In this article, the authors expose the causes of the world’s fresh water shortages and their consequences in the long term run. According to the authors the irreversibility of the phenomenon is due to the fact that the amount of water is fixed while the supply is increasingly exacerbated by an increase in the population growth rate. However, they point out four major alternatives that can help solving the problem. The most valuable solution suggested by the authors is to recycle the sea water, which constitutes a huge amount of available water and which because of its salinity is considered useless. The authors are convinced that this is the best solution, but they point out the cost related to those investments as one of the biggest challenges that can disturb or even handicap this effort.

Issues
1. Has the environmental aspect of sea water use been taken into account?
2. How can this technology be useful to poor countries?
3. How can this solution solve permanently the problem of fresh water shortages?

Your opinion
In my opinion, this solution is obviously not a durable one for two reasons. For one thing, this solution is not accessible to the whole world. Many countries which are in the situation of water stress have no access to the sea. Also, given the fact that the cost of that technology is high, we come to doubt that this solution is the best, because the majority of the countries which face water shortages are in the developing world. The second reason is that such a project will have harmful effects on the environment. In fact, such technology like the existing one for oil needs a huge plate form on the sea, pipelines, and other installations that can seriously generate damages to the environment.

SIU looks into interest rates for borrowing

By Ryan Voyles

Daily Egyptian
June 16, 2010

Short summary
In this article, the author talks about the current financial problem that SIU is facing now and the willingness expressed by its administration to borrow money. The idea suggested by the officials is to sell the debt of SIU in a financial market at an exchange rate that will be profitable to the institution. According to administrators, this will be the best solution to solve their financial crisis instead of counting on the state aids.

Issues
 Isn’t it a dangerous situation to borrow money from particular?
 Won’t this financial crisis impact the quality of the education at SIU?
 Is it really economic to wait for the exchange rate to be low before borrowing the money when we know that the fall semester is about to start?

Your opinion

In my opinion, SIU should adopt some policies in order to reduce its expenses rather than contracting other debts. This accumulation of debt might be the result of mismanagement and the problem will not end if they don’t find what goes wrong in the system. Some policies consisting of lessen or even suppress some irrelevant charges faced by the institution seem to be the best solution. For example, the refection of buildings, the construction of stadium should be stopped, and the administration should try as possibly as it can, to reach a certain level of energy efficiency as well.

Shawnee library system prepares for big changes and even bigger cuts

Short summary
In her article, the author talks about the challenge that libraries in Illinois are facing now. In fact, the national system that used to help some libraries get better services in terms of book storage management will no longer exist resulting from the decrease in the government financial support. Many libraries will definitely lose their online book supports, which will negatively affect some of them and even push others to simply give up their activities. This situation has already created damage and will be exacerbated if something is not done to resolve it.

Issues that you can find
Can an end in the online book support negatively affect the educational system in Illinois?
Isn't the online book catalogue a threat for many libraries?
Giving up the online book service is not creating a favorable zone for unemployment?
Can libraries offer great quality of services without the online book system?

Your opinion (2-5 sentences)
This is a little decision that can create harmful effects in the long term run. The educational sector is as susceptible as any other sector traditionally judged fragile such as public health, army, and environment. Any negative variations or mismanagement of education or any other related area may lead to undesirable consequences. Since the education sector plays an important role in the economical and social development of any country, it will be a disaster if it goes wrong. What the state authorities should do is to accompany the libraries at a certain level and try to get them to progressively pay for the services they receive rather than surprisingly cutting it down.

Gabe's Presentation #2

Author: The Economist
Title of Article: The Nightmare Scenario
Publication: The Economist
Date: May 29, 2010

Summary
There is a dangerous environment is the Korean peninsula because of nuclear practices of North Korea. Nowadays, there is convincing evidence that proves that North Korea sank “The Cheonan” where 46 sailors died. However, North Korea continues with its nuclear practices and also with aggressive behavior toward its neighbor South Korea. Besides, China who is the main supporter of North Korea has not said anything about this serious episode.

Issues
Is North Korea a threat for the international community?
Why does North Korea continue increasing its nuclear power?
Why does China support North Korea in every of its dangerous behavior?

Opinion
I think that North Korea is acting in a very dangerous way. Besides, they are being supported by China. This scenario is too complex, because there is a constant possibility of a nuclear war in the Korean peninsula. The best way would be to start a conversation between these two countries so that they can live in peace; however, this is so difficult while Kim Jong continues in the power of North Korea.

First facebook, then the world

Frederic B. Ouedraogo

The Economist
May 29, 2010

This article raises the problem of non control of information shared by facebook users and its consequences in the society. In Pakistan, many people protested against facebook for having published some images judged offensive by some religious leaders.
The issues related to this article can be summarized into three questions:
- Is it not a duty for facebook to control all information posted in the wall by users?
- Isn't facebook more political and ideological tool than a simple social network?
- Is it not necessary even obligatory for facebook to censure some information shared in the wall?

In my opinion, since facebook has become more and more used, some policies have to be adopted to ensure that the former goal of social networking is still respected. In many cases, facebook is about to be used by politicians to track their electors; by ideological groups to promote their point of view; and most recently by hackers and other criminal groups to con and dwindl innocent people. As far as concerning the social problem generated by facebook, I think that message susceptible to create trouble in one society or another, one religion or another should be forbidden. For that, facebook should create a group of moderators to analyze information prior to get it published.

Issues that you find:

a. What are he consequences of this disaster?
b. Is the American government taking the right position regarding BP?

Title of article: "Another round for Africa's Iron Lady"

Publication: The Economist

Date of article: May 22nd - 28th 2010

Short summary (2-5 sentences, no coping):

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, well known as the Africa's Iron Lady wants to be reelected in the next political elections of Nigeria. One of the reasons that she advocates is that she needs to finish with one situation of corruption in the country. However, this argument becomes debatable because main represents of her gabinet and her brother who works as a high represent of the government have been involved in corruption situations. One of the main defense of the Iron lady is that in her government she prioritize the economical development instead of other points in her agenda such as corruption.

Issues that you can find:

a. Is the argument of going against corruption valid as a reason of being reelected as Iron lady says?

b. Is economical growth a reason to do not fight against corruption in a government?

c. Are Iron Lady's arguments about corruption valid when some of her main represents of the government have been involved in corruption?

Your opinion ( 2-5 sentences):

In my opinion, it is pretty hard to use as a reelection pretext fighting against one situation that the same government did not take care of it before. This argument becomes stronger when high level people in her government are involved in corruption events. If I were a citizen of Nigeria even if my president says that she needs an other period to work hard against corruption (although she improved the economical situation in the country), I would think more than two times to vote in her favor.

Short summary:
This article shows the murder of a female judge and her clerk, when the tribunal of Brussels has been hearing a family and neighbor dispute by a man, who shot them and fled after his harmful action.
Issues:
Is violence a workable tool against law?
Are Europeans judges and lawyers able to operate in an endangered environment?
Opinion
I think when not in accordance with a legal decision the thoughtful action must be an appeal before a court. In addition, European countries have to reinforce the security system around and inside courts.

Issues

MAGNON'S PRESENTATION

Author: Perrine Mouterde
Title of article: Fifty years on, much remains, says Togo’s King Mensah
Publication: France 24
Date of article: April 12, 2010
Short summary:
In this article, King Mensah, a Togolese singer presents the dramatic and deteriorating situation of his country after fifty years of political independence. He claims that the current situation of his country, Togo, is worse than that of the colonial epoch. In addition, he states that the country is characterized by poverty, unemployment, and lack of adequate health and education infrastructures. He continues, arguing that this miserable condition can explain the ongoing political and social protest within the country.
Issues:
Are African countries immature to be independent?
Is democracy really the key for economic development in Africa?
Is Africa’s miserable economic situation fatalism?
Opinion
I think that in order to develop their countries, African leaders need to conceive and apply policies taking into account the specificity of their nations. Furthermore, in order to make prosperous their countries, leaders in Africa have to struggle against: nepotism, human rights violation, and corruption.

Title of Article: Europe´s three great delusions
Publication: The Economist
Date of Article: May 22, 2010

Summary
There is a serious concern in the European Union about the current rescue plan, because this founds can be wasted rather than fix the current problems. This situation could occur by three main causes. First, European countries are attributing all the blame to speculators, rather than check their fiscal vulnerability. Second, they are trust too much in the euro’s rescue rather than fix their weakness. Finally, they don´t think that a deep reform is necessary, which could causes the same problem in the future. In conclusion, there is no a self-criticism in the European countries, which is a big threat for the future development of the Euro Zone.

Issues
What measures the Euro zone is going to take against the main responsible, which is Greece?
What plan the Euro zone is going to apply different to euro’s rescue?
In the Euro zone sustainable in the future?

Opinion
In my opinion, the current rescue plan should be the first of many measures in order to improve the solvency of the financial system in the Euro area. The weakness countries in the Euro area like Greece, Italy and Spain need deep reforms in order to improve their current performance. In this way, this is an opportunity to review all policies and improve all aspect so that the Euro zone can continue in the future.
