Pesentation Report Paola Andrea No. 1

Author:

Title of article: "Another round for Africa's Iron Lady"

Publication: The Economist

Date of article: May 22nd - 28th 2010

Short summary (2-5 sentences, no coping):

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, well known as the Africa's Iron Lady wants to be reelected in the next political elections of Nigeria. One of the reasons that she advocates is that she needs to finish with one situation of corruption in the country. However, this argument becomes debatable because main represents of her gabinet and her brother who works as a high represent of the government have been involved in corruption situations. One of the main defense of the Iron lady is that in her government she prioritize the economical development instead of other points in her agenda such as corruption.

Issues that you can find:

a. Is the argument of going against corruption valid as a reason of being reelected as Iron lady says?

b. Is economical growth a reason to do not fight against corruption in a government?

c. Are Iron Lady's arguments about corruption valid when some of her main represents of the government have been involved in corruption?

Your opinion ( 2-5 sentences):

In my opinion, it is pretty hard to use as a reelection pretext fighting against one situation that the same government did not take care of it before. This argument becomes stronger when high level people in her government are involved in corruption events. If I were a citizen of Nigeria even if my president says that she needs an other period to work hard against corruption (although she improved the economical situation in the country), I would think more than two times to vote in her favor.
