Title of article:

UN to Announce Somalia Famine Spreading.

Publication:

Voice of America.

Date of article:

September 02, 2011

Short summary

According to the article, Famine has been officially declared in six regions of Somalia and the United Nations expects the famine to spread across all regions within two months. Somalia currently has the highest malnutrition level in the world with malnutrition rates at more than 30 percent. The declaration of famine confirms that the food crisis in the Horn of Africa is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.

Issue that I can find

1-What are the causes of famine in Somalia?

2- Do you think that political factors and the lack of a strong government in Somalia have led to increase the problem?

3- Is enough humanitarian assistance to the needs of Somalis?

4- What interest of al Qaeda cooperation with the Somali Youth Movement?

My opinion

In my opinion, I think that the drought may worsen the security situation in Somalia. This underscores the deep link between food security and national security. More than 12 million people suffering from the famine, drought and lack of food in Somalia. They are need of immediate humanitarian assistance. Many are so hungry that they risk starving to death. Although this, according to the United Nations, has improved the security situation in the capital since the withdrawal movement generally young militants, making it easier to expand the scope of relief efforts in the region.
