According to the article Bowie city promotes recycling (2008), The Washington Post. The City of Bowie in the state of Maryland is encouraging people to start recycling. There are already a number of citizens that recycle even there is no a law however, the authorities of the city are promoting considering that more people should recycle. To promote the plan there are propaganda in newspapers and the website of the city. This program has been announced since September last year; however, the process is slow because the city has to provide to household bins to place the materials to be recycled. James Henrikson director of Public work said, “The test program is expected to cost about $60,000 and would involve 1,000 households”. It is also expected that in the whole program would get involved about 168,000 people but this could happen in 2010. There are some cities around Bowie, such as Laurel and College Park that have already started a similar plan and the amount of recycling material has grown considerably.

The need of recycling is increasing every day. We listen every day about global warming as a part of the destruction of biodiversity. Natural resources are decreasing every day and not too many countries have considered seriously, what to do before is too late. Recycling is a need today because the environment is damaged not only by using natural resources but also by throwing away toxic materials that have great negatives effects in the environment. I think that everyone should recycle. Recycling should be a mandatory issue for every single people in the world. By doing this, we would be more cautious how we use our natural resources.

This article retrieved from CNN on February 14, 2008 talks about a terrible tragedy at Northern Illinois University where a gunman shot against a group of people killing five of them before killing himself. The motives for the murders are still unknown. He was an ex student at NIU, and according to references of his ex teachers, Stephen Kazmierczak was a very good student. He was awarded a few years ago at Northern Illinois University because he was a outstanding student while he was enrolled at the university. According to an interview given by Rosie Moroni a witness at the scene to CNN, she was outside Cole Hall near the King Commons when she heard shots coming from the classroom she was heading to. The shot was followed by "a lot of people screaming," then people ran out the doors yelling, "He's got a gun, call 9-1-1," she said. The classes were cancelled Thursday and Friday, and the campus remained closed.

What is going on with our youth and society? What happened to Stephen Kazmierczak? What were his motives to kill these people? What are we going to do? What is motivating people to act in strange ways, bringing pain, sadness, sorrow, fear and death, to community? This was neither the first nor the worst tragedy that occurred in an American University. In fact, it is becoming common hearing about shootings anywhere, either provoked by students or ex students in schools or by particular people in different public places as occurred in a commercial centre in Omaha, Nebraska a few months ago. There was also a shooting in a commercial centre in Chicago, Illinois just two weeks ago. Today there is in mourning not only Northern Illinois University but also relatives and friends of those people that without reason died because someone had an unknown problem, that at this point no one knows for sure what happened.

Bush's Final State of the Union

I read an article in CNN which was about the final state of the union address that the president of the United States delivers to the nation every year on January. In his speech the president Bush spoke about the situation in the country focusing in some topic such as: economy, Iraq, expenses, external politics, education, terrorism and the army. The president Bush emphasized in economy of the country considering that in this moment American economy is “in a period of uncertainty”, he encouraged American citizens to believe that the situation will change, “In the long run, Americans can be confident about our economic growth. But in the short run, we can all see that growth is slowing” he said. He mentioned some of the politics that the congress should approve trade agreement with Colombia.

In the last year of his government the president Bush talked about economic politics, he said “he would cut or eliminate 151 "wasteful or bloated" government programs in his budget for 2009 -- cuts he said would total $18 billion of a budget that amounted to $3 trillion in 2008” He also encouraged to the “lawmakers to work together” even though in a few months the country will have a new president. Considering that the economy in the United States is in a very hard situation (according to the president Bush), it is a worrying situation not only for American citizens but also for the world.
