Unborn babies carry pollutants, study finds

This article,Unborn babies carry pollutants, study finds, discussed about another health issue written by Maggie Fox, who works as reporter for Health and Science Correspondent in Washington. The main topic is connected with environmental warnings, and maybe it could be a political concern because members of the U.S Congress could make suggestions for a new legislation in the control of chemicals on the environment. Also, the article refered one survey on 10 newborn polluted babies by examining their umbilical cords blood in the U.S in 2003. In addition, according to the Enviromental Protection Agency, they found an average of 287 harmful additives in the babies' blood (Para. 7)such as mercury (methylmercury produced by coal-fired in power factories), polyaromatic hydrocarbons by burning gasoline and garbage,flame-retardants well known as Teflon, and DDT (strong pesticide used in farms)which are harmful for humans. Finally, the big concern involved in this issue is certanly a federal investigation that has been iniciated.

In my opinion, I think that it is an important article because we certantly know that 10 newborn babies cannot be a strong proof related to all people of a nation. However, the decision of some Congressmen to give fundings to institutions like the Environmental Protection Agency is a great begining. I think that it could be the best solution to find clonclusive evidence from factories that make products using plastic as oil derivatives, the biggest polluting non-renewable source. Finally, three thoughts come to me on this topic: First, it is unfair that newborn babies start a live in bad health conditions. Second, I am not sure that national pollution laws work well in any kind of business. Third, it is my impression that economy is the most important reason when governments do not act against polluting factories.

Can high tech save your life?

According to this article, “Can high tech save your life?” , America’s hospitals are confused about the issue that they use high technology, such as computer, to observe patient’s condition. There are two opinions. One of these is using computers helps patients. Actually, using high technology causes lower mortality rate. However, another one is using high technology may make new errors, such as double dosing.

I consider that using high technology is effective for hospitals. I have a friend who is nurse. She works at ICU. She always has to repeat three actions that are looking patient’s condition, checking monitor, and taking notes. If she uses computers, she watches only monitors. So, she will concentrate on patient beyond the present. I believe that computers support doctors and nurses.

Web site to provide sex offender registries

According to the article, “Web site to provide sex offender registries,” we can know an information about sex offenders by using internet. The information provides more than 500,000 sex offenders’ names, photos, and crime histories. All states will join this service after six months. However, some opponents believe that this information is an invasion of privacy because those offenders have already finished their punishment.

I think this information can help our calm life because we can prepare to prevent from criminals. Some people argue with this service, but I can not agree with their opinion. I believe that sex offenders do not have a right of privacy since they already violated victim’s right.

Bush promised to help India build nuclear power plants (rewarding India)

This article says that President Bush promised to help India promised to help India build muclear power station last weeks. Without a doubt, having a good relationship with India will makes good effect in today's world. However, countries developing nuclear weapons, such as North Korea, Pakistan and Iran, may complain about this unfairly treatment of U.S. "if India, why not us?" they can ask U.S. Actually, India has developed and tested nuclear weapons against Nuclear Non-Proliferation.

I think there are two issues concernig this article. One is that the the help to build nuclear plant by U.S. could stop the renewable energy project. U.S. should help not for nuclear but for latest technology of renewable energy. The other is the unfair treatment by U.S. I understand the aim of U.S, however, they cannot avoid the claims from other countries.

Ad war looming in sleep aid market

The title of my article is Ad war looming in sleep aid market. This article tells about new sleep medications for chronic insomnia, especially Lunesta which in one of new generation medication for long term use. With its launching, advertising for this medication finally overcome the advertising for erectile dysfunction drugs adverting which used to be the most competitive drug advertising field. Some analysts say that Lunesta will reach 1 billion a year with its sale. It will save many Americans who have chronic insomnia and will be a simple solution.

I think that this is very goon news for many people who are suffering from sleepless night and also it is good for whom need long term medicine for lifetime use. In my opinion, the number of people with insomnia will be increased in the future and almost everyone experienced at least one insomnia symptom in a month. Therefore, introducing a new generation of sleep medication for long-term use would be good solution and people have been waiting for these kind of drugs. The industry of insomnia drugs will be huge scale of sales on people's demand.

Second year for downtown bars closed, University open

In this article, Second year for downtown bars closed, University open , the author talks about how to a void the problem of Halloween by closing the bars. For example in 2000 the University was closed and the bars were open. So, 150 people were arrested and also they damaged the city. However, when the city of Carbondale saw how serious this problem is, they closed the bars and the university was open. According to the police of Carbondale in the last Halloween nothing occurred to the city.

In my opinion, closing the bars in the Halloween is the best solution to avoid this kind of problem. Moreover, when the university is open the students will be busy which also is great idea. I think the city must keep doing the same thing every Halloween to avoid the violence in the future. However, that will keep the record of Carbondale clean, which will be great thing for the history of the city.

Another Frill is Gone

Do you enjoy the flight without the complimentary food? On September 1 , Passengers won’t have the pretzels during the flight in US Airways. The US Airways will save more than one million per year. It will only provide the complimentary juice and soft drink to passenger on the flight. The soft drink will disappear some day, too. In the future, it will have a lot of problems. For example, when passenger has the soft drink, they will wait for the pretzels which flight attendant should give them before. Passengers will have complaints at first; the airlines need to know how to solve these problems. There are some airlines that provide free pillows, magazines and plush airport clubs which spend hundred of millions per year. American Airlines earns $40,000 when they take out the black olives from salads. For saving money, the airlines tries to find another punier thing. The Southwest airline knows the charge for producing food, so they never provide the complimentary food. Their goal is passenger can use less money for taking the airplane.

There are more services in flight will vanish soon, because the airline don't want to spend the money for the passenger. We will buy any food including the soft drink in flight. Passengers should have the right for against the airlines. If the services in flight disappear, the flight ticket should become more cheaper.

Career Spotlight: Take Time for a Real Vacation

In the article “Career Spotlight: Take Time for a Real Vacation”, Kim Clark points out that most people do not take “real” vacations (June 27, 2005, Para, 3). Despite the fact that Americans give up 3 vacation days a year in average, 10 people out of 100 even contact with the office every day during their vacations (Para. 3). Stacey Moran, a psychologist who works for a Travelers insurance company, suggests that workers should go as far from the company as they can for vacation, or call the company on a regular basis instead of being anxious all the time (Para. 6 & 7).

I think it is a pity that nowadays people need to “learn” how to relax. Maybe the society is responsible for creating such an anxious atmosphere among people, or it is the people who should try with effort to let go sometimes.

More Men Seeking Plastic Surgery to 'Freshen' Their Looks, Remain Competitive in the Workplace

In this article,“More Men Seeking Plastic Surgery to ‘Freshen’ Their Looks, Remain Competitive in the Workplace”, there is a common thing in spite of different languages. Here is a person who is displeased with a private outward appearance. The person is not a woman, but a man. Male cosmetic surgery has been increasing for 10 years. For instance, liposuction, eyelid surgery, nose surgery, male breast reduction and hair transplantation. Men undergo these for the reasons of self-satisfaction and retaining their youthfulness in competitive workplace. There is a simple surgical operation, such as Botox, laser hair removal, chemical peels, micro dermabrasion, etc. Men do not any more cover up the fact that they have had an operation. If you(he) want cosmetic surgery, you will check credible plastic surgeons. That is because false cosmetic surgeons, now and then, operate surgery.

In my opinion, I agree with male cosmetic surgery, because self-confidence is an important thing during life. The manner of assurance produces a good result. It is good to fix the defects of appearance. He performs an operation; after that he will find happiness. It is also good to his mental health. A man who is operated on is a courageous person. He admits himself in his weak point and perseveres in his efforts. I set high value on this attitude.

States wants to weed out marijuana-flavor candy

In this article, State wants to weed out marijuana-flavor candy, the author wrote that Connecticut is considering to ban the marijuana-flavor candy from store. Five other states have already banned or are considering to ban the candy. According to the article, though the candy contains hemp essential oil, it doesn’t contain THC, the hallucinogenic compound in marijuana. However, attorney claims that it might glamorize drugs for children.

First, I surprised at existence of drugs flavored candy. And we can easily buy it even if children. Should it be banned because it is marijuana flavor? Or do you think it is “just candy”? I think it should be banned. It can be first step to start drugs not only children but also adults. Moreover, I don’t understand the reason for making it. I think it should be banned before selling or making.

India to collet umbilical cords for cell research

This article, India to collect umbilical cords for cell research, discussed about one way of collecting master cells through umbilical cords cut off newborn babies in India with two purposes. First, this umbilical collection will be used to create "umbilical cord banks" where doctors and scientists use master cells in different medical resarches. Second, this research will be treated in the next biotechnology conference where it will analyse the guidelines for master cells researches as a potential new way of saving people's life.

In my opinion, this is an interesting article because it refers to one of the biggest health and ethical issues in the world's history connected with stem or master cells. Nowadays, we have heard about the use of biotechnology in a negative way such as cloning animals and people. However, lots of researches are helping sick people who are expecting one oppotunity for changing their lives after suffering from severe diseases for many years such as leukaemia and anemia. Therefore, I agree with these kinds of medical researches only if they do not break down some limits of science such as cloning people or something else.

Group calls for health warnings on soft drinks

According to this article, "Group calls for health warnings on soft drinks," U.S. consumer group insists that the beverage companies should write warnings on soft drinks. Soft drinks contain too much sugar and caffeine. These ingredients could harm someone’s health.

I think that the beverage companies should write warnings on soft drinks because soft drinks have some problems about human health. Here are too many kinds of soft drinks. However, we can not get healthy drinks, such as, tea, fresh juice, and water. I consider that such circumstance affects human health.

Parents not always ready to help overwieght kids

From this article, parents are not always ready to help overweight kids. According to Dr. Kay Rhee's study, of 151 parents of children who were overweight or onthe verge of being over weight, 44 percent of parents said they were not planing to on instituting life style changes any time soon. On the other hand, parents who would make such changes soon or were already doing so is 38 pecent.

The health of children, it is a responsibility of parents.Because of the lack of parents' knowledge about nutrition and diet, however, some parents cannot fullfill their duties. They should learn about relationship between obese and disease. If they knew the importance of diet, overweight kids would decrease.

U.S. drivers feel less safe on the road

From this article, U.S. drivers, the Maxon-Dixon Polling and Research shows many American drivers talk on the phone, fall asleep, read something, adjust DVD players, send or read text message, and consult global positioning systems while they are driving. Thus, the other drivers worry that they can be involved in a car accident because the drivers who do those activities do not focus on their driving.

Drivers need more concentration to drive, so it is not good to do the other activities while driving. I don't want to have a car accident, so I won't talk on the phone or do anything else while I am a driver.

U.S workers say they waste two hours a day

This article says U.S employees usually dissipate two hours a day in their occupation. That time is caused by some reasons such as low payment, less tasks, or tasks which are longer than than companies' expectations. Old workers relatively spent, however, short times at working hours compared with others. In addition to this information, a research manager mentioned that sometimes wasting time is helpful to improve employees' ability.

I think it is a natural thing to have time such as break time in working hours. As a human, employees can't work the whole working hours without just one conversation. A break time can contribute to making employees' ability better. Definitely, I think a break time is also admitted as a sort of working hours naturally.

Report: Other factors for childhood obesity

Did you believe your BMI which has been measured? This article is about the fact that there is no evidence that children with a high BMI (body-mass index) should lose their weight. The BMI is still useful, but it just needs more evidence. The pediatricians also have misunderstanding about how to define the obese children. They always use the weight and height for distinguishing the obese and lean, but it can’t be used this way to define the obese children.

It’s not a good phenomenon about too many obese children now. Because parents don’t care about what kind of food their children have. So children don’t know how they can eat healthier. It’s a serious problem in more developed countries now.

Women's Health Fears Often Don't Line Up With Reality

Women's Health Fears Often Don't Line Up With Reality
Heart Disease Claims the Most Lives, But Cancer Is Feared More

Copyright © 2005 ABC News Internet Venture

According to Kagan, E., the latest survey done by the Society for Women’s Health Research shows that some certain diseases that scare women a lot are in fact not those that cause major mortality among women (Emily Kagan, Jul. 7, 2005, ABC news). For instance, while cancer is the No. 1 frightening disease in women’s minds, heart disease kills the most in reality. And while women ignore emphysema, the No. 4 killer, they rank HIV/AIDS as the fourth scary illness, which is indeed not among the top ten killing diseases. Experts are worrying that the discrepancy between women’s fears and reality will lead to women’s ignorance of those really fatal diseases. However, at least women are aware of some of the ailments. The next thing for women to do is to bridge the gap between their fears and reality, and to take action to prevent the diseases.

To my surprise, those top ten killing diseases are really far from women’s commonly known diseases. While some of the diseases are left out in the list, it seems that the advocacy groups of ovarian cancer and breast cancer have been doing so well that we become keenly aware of them. In my opinion, although the gap between fear and reality is somewhat wide, it is better for women to be conscious than unaware. In this mundane world, people are highly likely to get bad habits and live unhealthy lifestyles. We all know that, and we always receive teachings from the elders and warnings from the media. However, we have been learning the importance of health and the terror of disease, but we merely become anxious and do nothing. I think it is really important for us to do something to stop the preventable tragedy from happening. The perception of illness is just a beginning, despite the fact that there is still a long way to go; whether we take the awareness into action is what really matters.

Hidden sex scenes in Grand Auto: San Andreas

In this article, Hidden sex scenes in Grand Auto: San Andreas, this is a kind of video game in the plasystation2. However, this game is meant to be for entertainment software, and children play with this game. But, hidden sex scenes in this game are available by using code, which anybody could have.

In my opinion, this kind of game could change our children's behavior and mind. So, this game must be illegal, because it has a lot of violence such as sex scenes, which can affect the society. My advice to all parents who have children is to be careful in the future from this kind of video game.

Slow walking may be prescription for obese

According to this news, slow walking could be a prescription for an obese person. Researchers found the obese adults burn more fat when they walk slowly for a long time than slow walking. Also, they say that strolling can help obese people to burn more calories and there may be lower risk of injuries. The research team tried to find out how slow walking related to conditions of people's bodies and ways to spend more calories by walking.

In my opinion, I agree with the result of slow walking. Sometimes, slow walking helps more to burn calories, especially for overweight people. Because, they use even more energy than normal people when they walk. In addition, obese people have risk to injure their skeleton when they walk fast. I think that slow walking is certainly a better way to keep health than any prescription.

Aurora considers banning pit bulls

In this article, Aurora considers banning pit bulls, it mentioned that a pit bull’s owner could not live in Aurora with his or her dog. Some residents in Aurora are afraid that a pit bull would attack their family. So, the city council considers that people should not have pit bulls. I think this banning is ridiculous because trained dogs are not so dangerous.

Terrorists attack London

This article, Terrorists attack London, was from Canada and was written on the morning of the explosions in London. The blasts were in the morning and came on the day after London got the Olympic bid, and the day that the G8 summit started in Scotland.

I have a brother in London, and he takes public transportation every day as a matter of principle, because he's an environmentalist. We called him and found out that he was ok, but I think this kind of sudden random death is on everyone's mind and is part of everyone's fears now. It seems like a few homemade bombs can bring the whole world to complete insanity. It's crazy. And it makes my brother and me angry.

I also have a sister in New York...-Tom Leverett

And now, a few words about me

And now, a few words about ME...an article in the Orlando Sentinel, tells about how celebrities are making their own webpages and weblogs. The best example is Jeff Bridges, whose webpage is airy, arty, pretty.

I like his website and find it interesting. He's controlling his own image. Maybe he's tired of having the National Enquirer do it for him...I don't know why he's doing it, but I think many celebrities will start doing it, and I think that it will change the way we see celebrities, in a BIG way.

My question is, how did they miss ME? I'm a celebrity. I have at least TWO weblogs!
