Short summary:
There is a new scam in Williamson County in which some residents in this county have reported that they have received phone calls and text messages urging them to give out their bank account details in rturn for lowering their interest rates on their visa or mastercards. Victims received landline and cell phone numbers on their caller ID, but this was done via the internet to deceit people.

Issues I Could Find:
How to differenciate between a call from the bank employees or deceitful people?
Should we trust transactions over the phone?

My Opinion:This is common fraud in many countries. Thus, it should be taken seriously by police. I do think that if the whole world unite together against it, we can control this dangerous faud. Fighting against these crimes require international effort and not an individual one.

Opinion
In my opinion, SIUC is developing an interesting and good social role with these people. In spite of the fact that SIUC does not receive any funds for this, SIUC is using a big amount of resources on these people, which should be taken as an example for other universities.

Mohammad Dashti's Final Project - "The Impact of Pop Culture on our society"

When you hear the word “Pop Culture” what’s the first thing that comes into your mind? Mostly music, television, and internet. But the truth is different. Pop Culture is attached to our life almost in everything, in how we dress, in what we eat , and even in what our children are watching. Technology and media are the best presenters of Pop Culture and they are the main controller of all its aspects.

When I first thought about the topic, I really wanted to know and to learn about the American opinion about pop culture and what is their point of view. So, I made my survey paper based on all the questions that I wanted answers for ,all the facts that I wanted to learn about, and all the opinions that I wanted to hear. Then, I went out to the Student Center, the Mall ,and Wal-Mart the supermarket to hand out my papers and to gather all the information. Almost all Americans think that Pop Culture is basically all about music, which is not true in our real life . I truly believe that pop culture have a very bad affect on our society especially on our children. Some people agreed with me in the survey, because of the media and what they are representing nowadays. Some people don’t think that pop culture is the main effector. They think that we are the reason, for example, parents are the main effector on their children not pop culture. Apparently people in America are becoming more attached to pop culture in eything, for example, fashion, music, traditions , and even beliefs. When I asked the a question that says “do you believe that pop culture is a demonic system that wants to control our life“, most of them said no, however 8 out of 30 shared my belief. A lot of the people said that we create our bad and good sides of things, and Pop Culture is truly not a bad thing to consider, that’s only our point of view, which I don’t agree with. In my opinion I think they are trying to control the world by posting a bad influence on us and our kids in order the affect the whole society.

In the end I think it was very interesting to share my thoughts with the American mind and to know what they really think about pop culture and how they are considering it. Who knows maybe there is a chance to save our world from those monsters, to make our planet a safe place for us and for our next generation.

My group members are Tweeki, Bohee, and me. Our topic is envirnmental problems because now environmental problems happen everywhere such as pollution, grobal warming, and acid rain. I have a question that how american people consider it. To know my question, we made survey. The questions are...

my opinion
I think that American people don`t mind environmental problems because they produce a lot of CO2 and chamicals from car and factory. In fact, they think about it deeply because they are worried about polliton`s threat when we saw the Q2`s answer. In addition, they consider the solutions of these problems, such as use less, recycle and reuse, and lost waste. On the other hand, some people answered the special answers, for example people should develop the new technologies(solar, wind, water), and use eco-bag. I think that the most important thing will be to be more conscious of the environmentaround us. If people do so, our earth will get worse. Everybody shouid think about environmental problems.

Tweeki's final project

Our team members are Bohee, Mistu and me. Our topic is about environment, we want to know what the Americans think of the environmental problems by surveying twenty-four people. For our survey sheets, there are five questions which include the result of environmental pollution, environmental conservation, people's feeling about nowadays' environmental pollution and people's interests in kinds of environmental problems.

As a result, some people are not only interested in water pollution and climate change, but they are also worried about air pollution. Air pollution is common in Asian countries, so we think that air pollution is also the problem of the whole world. On the other hand, there are many ways we can do to prevent environmental pollution, such as recycling, reusing, less wasting and less driving. If we don't prevent environmental pollution, or if we don't take care of the environment, not only people will suffer, but also animals and other diversities will also be in danger. Therefore, environmental pollution is the most important thing our human need to solve at present.

Darius: Financial and Economic Crisis

The Economic and Financial Crisis in USA

As a project for the newstalk class, Aina, Je and I went to interview two professors in the Economics Department of the Southern Illinois Univerity about the causes and consequences of the financial and economic crisis. The interview also covers actions taken by US authorities to solve the problem and their effectiveness.
According to those two experts, the crisis began in the housing and the banking sectors. People were taking a lot of mortgages to buy houses and banks were landing money to them even if they were not qualify. As prices of houses raised throughout the past years, both banks and people tought they would be able to sell those houses and make a substantial profit on them.
But the concequences of the war in Iraq, a raise in energy cost and fosil fuel hit the economy of United States American and the other MDCs very strong. Rapidly people were forced to sell their home in other to face their financial problems; and banks took over a lot of houses whose owners were unable to pay thier mortgages. However even the bank faced problems to sell thoses houses. As houses were decreasing rapidly it became more profitable to let a bank take over once home and to buy and an other than to keep on paying the mortgages. So, many banks collapsed because that and because of bad placements they made in unsustainable affairs.
With the theory of general equilibrium in economy, which stipulates that all sectors in the economy are connected, people who used to work for the housing sectors as plomber, electritian, home agent etc..., lost their jobs and started lookig for employements in other sectors. This situation had two consequences; the surplus of people seeking for jobs in other sectors causes a decrease in salary in those sectors and with less jobs and less money people were buying less and other sectors had to cut off staff because the decrease in the demand of goods and services. The crisis became general.
To solve this problem the US government came with stimulus plan for the banking system and tax return for households in other to stimulate both people to buy more and small business to hire more. The result of US stimulus plan and tax r return is a positif recovery of the economy and a stabilization in the banking sectors. However, unemployement is still high as it is the last sector to recover after an economic crisis.

We made questions like 1 multiple choice, 1 yes or no question, and 3 short answer questions. we did the interview for 25 people as Cesl teachers, librarian, and SIU students.

More than half american anwsered that they are intersted in climate change.
On the other hand, Many people gave answers that air pollution is the greatest environmental pollution in U.S. They answered because of emission from factories and cars, it has become serious problem in the U.S. Only one person answered that so far is okay. American answered that they feel fear from environmental pollution. Only 3 people answered that they do not feel fear about that.
American think that they can prevent environmental pollution by using less car, saving water, reducing waste, recycling and reusing, and stopping smoking.
Finally they answered that they can image if they do not prevent pollution it will cause harmful global warming and climate change.


In my opinion, In Korea, we have serious air pollution in Seoul mostly because of cars.
Air pollution is serious problem not only in U.S, but also other countries.
I was suprised that American do not think deeply that environmental pollution is harmful. They know that it is serious, but they were look like that they really do not care. I could not get specific anwser from American who i did interview.
I think that we can prevent environmental pollution from small thing as recycling and reusing.

Won Jun Jung's survey article

We want to know how American people(expecially young people)think about family, marriage, and baby. So we made 10 survey questions about American familly. Especially I want to know how American christian think about the family, so I ask the young girls who attend in Vine Church. After this survey, I am very surprised because they want to merry whin 25 years old. Usually in our curture(South Korea), young women want to marry during 28-30. And they think that 2-3 babies are reasonable numbes in family. Compared to my country which has suffered from low birth rates, this number is very impressive to me.
Through this survey, I can know that American young people are supringly conservative than I think before.

The Economic and Financial Crisis in USA

Our group was composed by Darius, Je and myself. We chose this topic because first, we are interested on Economics, and second it is a current issue that has a great impact on most of Americans and even on many economies worldwide. We tried to collect the opinion of two Economics Professor at SIU, using interview techniques. We asked them several questions about the causes of the crisis and its characteristics, the impacts on different sectors and actors of the US economy, the reaction of US Government faced with the crisis, the results of these actions and the lessons that can be taken from the crisis.
The origin of the financial crisis was the easy lending policy run by banks before 2007. This policy consists on lending money to people who do not give sufficient guarantee of reimbursement. Mortgage loan has increased dramatically because the prices of housing have risen and was very profitable, so there was a rush to invest in that sector. Banks contributed to accelerate the process by easy lending, guaranteed by houses. They also expected to make profit on the housing bubble even if their clients will not be able to pay back. Many people couldn’t pay back their loan and tried to sell their houses at the same time. Consequently, the prices of housing fell down and banks could not recover their money back. Between, banks have sold the mortgage to other financial investors (Hedge Funds) and then transferred the failure.
The crisis has led to the collapse of many banks and financial institutions in the US and caused trouble in the banking sector. US Banks became very cautious with lending and that had a great impact on economic activities depending on lending such as housing and industries. Private Companies were forced to cut jobs and expenses because the demand for goods and services has decreased. The US economy was in recession and households situations have been seriously affected because many people lost their jobs.
To respond to the crisis, the US Government tried to save some important banks from bankruptcy, by injecting directly money into them, in order to support their losses. Some big companies also benefited from this stimulus package. In addition to that, the Government tried to reduce the impact of the crisis on small businesses and households by cutting taxes.
The result of these actions was a positive economic growth during the three last months of 2009. However, the unemployment rate is still very high. According to Economists, the employment is the last thing that recover from the crisis. The trend would probably maintained until the end of 2010.
What are the lessons that can be taken from this crisis? First, banks and consumers have to be more careful with lending. Economists recommend reforms that make the financial sector more transparent. The degree of sophistication of financial instruments should be reduced and their valuation reviewed. The US should reduce the level of its debt, public and private, because countries that were not accumulating debt suffered less from the crisis.

This article points out the failure of the US to compete in the clean energy market, which is considered as the biggest economic development driver for the future. The US is the first who created the technologies in renewable energy, but China has become the leader in the market now. The Author urged the US Government to take action to correct the problem. Long-term guaranteed purchase contract would be the most effective way to increase the confidence of manufacturers and stop them relocating overseas.

Issues:
Should US government set clean energy policies as one of its main priorities?
Can US manufacturers compete with Chinese manufacturers without subsidies from Government?
Are American people ready to buy and use clean energy?

My opinion:
Investing in clean energy, even if it is still expensive now, creates hopes for a sustainable development in the future. Rich countries, like the US, should lead the way because they have the technologies and the financial resources to do it. Not only is clean energy a promising market, but it also highly contributes to protect the environment and to fight against global warming.

The problem is more and more increasing in American teenagers, the proportion of obese is about one third in this category of age. The article explains the bad effect of obesity on health, especially the increasing risk of diabetes, artery damage, liver trouble, blood pressure and high cholesterol in kids. Strict diets, physical exercise and specialists advices was the method used by Paris to prevent obesity.

Issues:
Do American people worry about obesity?
Should we fight against obesity?
Are parents responsible for the obesity of their children?
Is it good to launch a program of sensitization about the problem at school?

My opinion:
The problem of obesity should be considered seriously, especially in kids. parents are fully responsible for their children’s health. a balanced nutrition since childhood is the best way to prevent obesity.

Summary:
This article talks about the financial problem that the John A. Logan College (JALC) may have to face, due to a $8 million shortfall of State funding. It will be a serious problem for the college as it counts for 40 percent of its budget. The Board of Trustees of JALC will meet to discuss the possible actions that can be done and they do not exclude budget cut in staffing and educational programs. JALC Administrators and Board members urged state action in order to avoid personnel cuts, which would be their last resort solution.

Issues:
Does the JALC worry about their prestige or is it a temporary situation which can be corrected?
Isn’t it possible for the College to run some lucrative activities in order to reduce their dependency on the State funding?
Does the situation affect the quality of the educational program at JALC?

My opinion:
Such kind of problem may always occur in situation of economic crisis. Even if the College cannot avoid budget cut, they have to maintain the quality of their services in order to keep their image and attract more students.

Yasile compaore survey with the philosophy group

Among the people we interviewed 60% agree with the fact that we are a product of our society. Descartes was this French philosopher that made this claim. People are more for the fact that society is responsible of who we are. Is not this casting the fault on society for our bad character and behaviors by approving this thesis? Some people believe that we are influenced by our culture but we still have our own choices to follow along and those people even disagree with the word “product” because, according to them, we are not made by society. In this same survey, 30% believe that technology has been good for our society and 5% believe the opposite. Another 5% believe both. That’s mean that for them technology has been good and bad. We think that the more people try to make their life easier and better with technology, the more problems they created and harder their lives becomes. So basically we believe that the price we pay for technology is higher than its worth.
To the 3rd question we asked, 80% said that they are willing to live a life that is much simpler and without technology. But for more precision some of the persons underline that that was not to the extent of no electricity and no bathroom. 20% believe that they are not ready. Yes we found out after research that to return to a state of hunter-gathers would be benefic for human race and nature. The question is : isn’t it too late? We also asked in the survey how people feel about advocating a life that is entirely natural and 30% said that this idea was desirable and 30% said the opposite. 20% claim that this idea was undesirable and impossible. People have different opinions over the way to take advantage of technology in the future. Basically the views were around: more control over technology, use it for good purpose such as education, reduce the harmful effects; Learn to respect technology. As one of our audience said “technology is neither good or bad but it is just the way we use it”. The biggest advantages of technology for people according to our survey are: health care, social interactions through easier way of communication (internet), solving social problems, transportation, things done faster, basically it makes life easier. But the disadvantages would be: wars, greed, impersonal life style, , large amount of waste, total dependency, invasion of privacy …. We asked a last question about the definition of a good life according to them (people we interviewed), and the majority said that to live without effort is the best definition of a good life. We had 20% of responses with religious characters that underline that a good life is lived for God and the others not ourselves.

The department of transportation hosted a national ban on texting while driving. Researchers say that drivers who are texting cannot concentrate on the road, which means that it is dangerous. 18 states exacted bans on it but 40% of the drivers said that they did not know.

Issues:

Should texting while driving be legal?

Is there any circumstance that texting while driving would be ok?

Statistics show that if you are texting, your eyes are not going to be in the road for two seconds every time you look at your phone. Therefore, I think that texting while driving must be illegal, because it has been causing a lot of accidents.

Helen's News Talk Survey

Our group members are Mateb, Won Jun, Haitao and I. Our survey topic is American family.

We wanted know about how American think about family. There are 9 questions and each member have 8 surveys and we asked 32 American to do this survey.

Most of them answered that wife should submit to her husband, parents should not hit their children in order to make them behave well, not support selecting the gender of a child, the most important factor in marriage is love,and the reasonable marriage age is 24-25. I believe most of them are similar in China, however, the reasonable marriage age was surprised me, because in China, the most common age to marry is 27-32. Also, people prefer boy rather than girl because of traditional reasons. But in person, i prefer girls.

Topic: Economic and financial crisis

A process

To begin with, our team fixed interview questions about the crisis of economy. After we selected questions for our project, we met experts who are lecturers in economics. We were needed for some expert explation on the questions. Namely, we were needed for professional help. Mr. Leverett helped us to meet them. We had about 15 minutes meeting each person. It took us about half an hour to ask the economic and financial questions. Even though we spoke to them with a bad pronuncition, they answered with kindness. It was a useful meeting.

A question and answer

I was focusing on the financial crisis in the U.S.. They had the same views in this question; the U.S. market has been depressed due to the sub-prime mortgage crisis, and the deteriorated cash flow resulted in global economic downturn and the slump in export market. They explain to us why the sub-prime mortgage crisis broke out. They pointed out that the main cause was a sharp drop in housing price. Meanwhile, they had prospects for the U.S. economy this year. In particular, Dr. Alison Watts told us "the global economy is suffering an economic recession caused by the U.S. financial crisis in the second half of 2008 and it is uncertain when the U.S. economy will recover from the recession. However, he told us " It will not be a double-dip in the U.S. economy." They also told us " Neverthless, American must turn this crisis into an opportunity." I think that this advice is very helpful to us.

Short Summary:-
The article was talking about the marrige concept, and how can married couples still love each other even after decades. The author provided us with a lot of examples and interviews with married couples sharing their marrige life secret success and how did they managed to keep it up all these years.

Issues that I found:-
1. Are we really today focusing on the fact that more people are getting divorce than people who are still married?
2. Can married couples pull up their lives even after 40 years without any downs or rough patches?

My opinion:-
I think that people can still live happily married until death they part. The problem is a lot of people don't want to solve their problems or they get bored after a couple of years. Marrige is not somthing that you get bored from and just quit. It is the concept of life; we must solve our problems and try to work thing out.

Issues:

• Taking into account all the financial problems that SIU is facing now, how appropriate is a project like this.
• How does the creation of a Cuban Caribbean Center will help the relations between Cuba and the United States?
• How does this center will really increase the number of enrollments by students? What kind of new students? Students from Cuban or Cuban already in USA.

My Opinion: The project as presented in the article is not sustainable. It does not really present the objective of the Center.

Project: Economic Crisis

The current financial crisis has been one of the most serious problems that have affected the world economy. Because this crisis began in the US, we suppose that it is a good opportunity to have the opinion of an American economist about it. Moreover, it is interesting to know the consequences generated by the crisis, and how to avoid it in the future. In order to reach our aim we interviewed a current lecturer at the economics´ department. The objective of this work is to get the answers of four key questions from an American expert. These questions are focused in the following aspects: causes, effects, solutions and future perspectives, which will give us a better understanding of this important issue.

This project provides us a deep comprehension of the financial crisis through the explanation of the lecturer. We have realized of the importance of the crisis impact on unemployment, trade, banks and economic growth. This has been the worst impact in the US economy since the great depression.
